HISTORY OF SCHOLARSHIP:

Prior to 1977, each year at Christmas, the employees of Ontario & Trumansburg Telephone companies would rack their brains trying to come up with gifts for the owners, members of the Griswold family. In 1977, the employees decided upon a gift that would continue giving throughout the years - the Griswold Telephone Scholarship. A committee of employees (consisting of Mary Hesbon, Jim Kenny, John Palermo, Marty Marsh, Bob Scott and Barb Wilson) worked very hard to orchestrate the planning and presentation of the scholarship.

In their December 21, 1977 letter to Bob Griswold, the employees said, "(We) recognize there is a special flow of good will from you, as the employer, to the employees... We have, in the past, shown our appreciation by presenting to each of you a gift at Christmas time. This year, and each year hereafter, barring unforeseen circumstances, the gift truly will be unique. The employees have unanimously agreed to finance a scholarship program... We feel the gift is unique because you not only endorsed the wishes of the employees, but volunteered the companies' matching the employees' contribution. The combined donations will make the award the largest to be presented to a graduating senior from the participating school districts served by the two companies. It's a small way for us to express our thank you for taking a special interest in each employee. Also, thank you for making the relationship more than just that of an employer-employee relationship. We do consider ourselves fortunate to be working for such fine people."
